I think that it is well understood that colour is important in design, but do we understand why? I have to work with colours on a daily basis and a lot more thought goes into choosing your brands colours than you might think…

Do you have a favourite colour?

Many individual have strong preferences for specific colours, however understanding why and what these colours mean is critically important when designing for a specific audience.

Colours and their meanings

Colours have hidden meanings. For example, blue is the colour from sky and water and is most often associated with a business, as it is perceived to be a calming, reliable colour. Green is the most common colour in nature and we perceive this colour to be the second ‘favourite colour’. It often provides a backdrop colour for design, and this is often used when an image of ‘natural goodness’ or sustainability is to be suggested. Every colour has a very specific psychological meaning and it is certainly important to understand the underlying meaning.

Don’t miss a design trick

A good designer will be able to advise you on the meaning of colour and should produce design with this in mind. Every aspect of design carries a deep-rooted physiological response; if you do not consider these within the design process, you are missing a trick!

Getting hung on a colour

The worst thing you can do is to start the design process with a specific colour as a prerequisite for the design. Many companies have corporate colours, which are fine as long as they have been well thought out, and this should be clearly understood.

Just remember

It’s worth considering that not all colours are perceived the same across each culture. It’s a classic one but in the west, black is the colour most often associated with death, however, in Japan it’s white. If you are developing a brand that has an international reach, remember to think how the colour is going to be received in all markets!

As everyone else at Cloud 9 seemed a little scared of the prospect of creating the Little Orange Man. I stepped in to show them how it should be done.

Since Christmas, some of our clients have been creating their ‘Make your own Mike’ (based on Morph).

As everyone else at Cloud 9 seemed a little scared of the prospect of creating the Little Orange Man. I stepped in to show them how it should be done.

I kept away from the latter to create an original Morph. After watching the DVD and it all looking fairly easy to do I quickly found out that CLEARLY wasn’t the case and the person doing it must have done a fair few to get as good as that!

I went from making a Morph that looked like an orange starfish to another that looked like a deformed stress ball to finally getting it looking like a REAL Morph.

Below are a series of pictures of my ‘Making of Morph’

A scary prospect

Two hours later this was my creation, yes TWO HOURS.

Morph sitting on my desk

He’s still sat proud in that very place although someone (I’m guessing Mike) has formed a wave with his arm!

Ash and John have yet to create a Morph so my Morph at the moment is King of Cloud 9 Morph’s!

We’re looking forward to seeing all Morph’s/Mike’s that have been created since the Christmas break.

The past couple of months has seen cloud 9 turn into a mini bakery club and I finally gave into peer pressure and decided the join the wannabe bakers amongst us. I decided to opt for a desert favourite of mine which is Chocolate Brownies and they went down a storm with everyone at Cloud 9. Quotes from the team included ’10/10′, ‘Gastro Pub Quality’ ‘Delicious’ and so on, not bad for a first attempt! Since the Cloud 9 ‘bakery club’ was created by ‘head baker’ Mike Sperrey we have seen and sampled various tasty delights such as Scones, Victoria Sponge, Chocolate Vanilla & Hazelnut Muffins, Lemon Drizzle Cake and various Pumpkin derivatives such as Pumpkin & Raisin Muffins and Pumpkin Pie. We also had some gingerbread men but sadly they didn’t make it to us this was due to treacle and slight timing issues. We are also awaiting participation from Clare, I’m sure she is just weighing the competition up before she strikes but we haven’t seen anything as of yet! I’ve attached some pictures below to show the progress of the Brownies from start to eat! The recipe I used one of Jamie Olivers as attached link below http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/dessert-recipes/bloomin-brilliant-brownies
